There has always been a difference between experiencing a sporting event live and in-person and watching it on the television. Each has its benefits: At a stadium, you get the excitement of experiencing the triumphs and tragedies of the game with thousands of like-minded fans, while television offers depth and clarity to the event, as well as lots of instant replays. In Florida, the Jacksonville Jaguars have perhaps done more than any other sports franchise to bring the best of both worlds together.
During the past off-season, EverBank Field, the Jaguars’ home stadium, added not one, but two high-definition video scoreboards–the largest anywhere in the world. Each scoreboard is 60 feet high and 366 feet in length–longer than the football field below them. With a total of more than 35 million LEDs, these video screens provide high-definition images that allow fans to see the smallest details on the field from hundreds of feet away.
Each video board consists of 15,000 individual modules and miles of cabling, which means the narrow installation time during the off-season presented a challenge, but local NECA contractor Miller Electric and IBEW Local 177 rose to the occasion. “The job went well,” says Dave Rolison, general foreman for IBEW Local 177. “We went in with about 45 men on the job. We had a short time frame to finish it in, and the guys did a real good job of bringing it in on time.”
