On July 30th, Giuseppe Muzzupappa, Assistant Chapter Manager of the Northeastern Illinois Chapter of NECA, moderated a panel discussion about the skilled labor shortage and the lack of interest in the trades as a career choice. Elbert Waters of Powering Chicago, Dan Allen of CISCO, Barry Sullivan of Ryan Companies and Michael McLean with Condor Partners were the panelists, adding great insight to the conversation. Executive Director Karyn Charvat delivered the welcome and brought greetings from PowerForward DuPage.
The panel discussed the contributing factors to the labor shortage: baby boomers retiring in larger numbers than young people entering the workforce; the removal of shop/vocational classes from high school; family pressures to attend college, and the myths and misconceptions of careers in the skilled trades.
Over 250 commercial real estate professionals registered for the webinar. Robust online chats and an active online Q&A session clearly showed a high level of interest in this topic and as a result, plans for another webinar may be forthcoming.
